Strigolactones (SLs) and KAI2 ligand (KL) are the plant metabolites that regulate plant development and AM symbiosis. SLs are perveiced by DWARF14 (D14) and work as plant hormones. They are also exuded from roots and work as rhizosphere signals that induce presymbiotic responses in AM fungi. DWARF14 LIKE/KARRIKIN INSENSITIVE2 (D14L/KAI2), a paralog of D14, is thought to perceive unidentified plant hormones, KL, which enhance seed germination and photomorphogenesis. In addition, AM symbiosis is severely disrupted in rice d14l mutants, indicating that the KL signaling pathway regulates AM symbiosis. Thus, SLs and KL, closely related metabolites, regulate AM symbiosis in totally different ways. In this seminar, I will present our recent findings on the functions and evolutions of these metabolites.
