Why did you choose Division of Biological Science at NAIST?
Nara is surrounded by natural environment, historical attractions, affordable restaurants, and a less crowded living environment. NAIST is the top research institute in Nara, offering sufficient resources and high-quality education. It is an ideal place for international students to focus on their research.
What do you like about Division of Biological Science at NAIST?
The laboratory I belong to conducts animal experiments with the ultimate goal of improving human well-being. Although modern medicine has made remarkable progress and average life expectancy continues to rise, infectious diseases like COVID-19 have still disrupted our lives for several years. During such times, the importance of vaccine development becomes especially evident. In this context, the field of bioscience plays a vital role in uncovering the mysteries of life.
What is your research topic?
Exploring potential vaccine adjuvants.
Did you change your research field after entering NAIST?If so, how was the experience of changing it?
I studied pharmacy in Taiwan. After working for two years as a vaccine rep and three years as a pharmacist, I realized that I was really drawn to the science behind the immune system. That curiosity brought me here to dive deeper into immunology.
What is your goals for the future?
I hope to contribute to humanity through research in vaccine adjuvants. As one of the few Taiwanese living in Nara, I also hope to take part in more Japan–Taiwan cultural exchange activities. I want to help more Taiwanese people realize that Nara is more than just its famous deer—although they are undeniably adorable.
What are your recommended around NAIST?(shops, fun places, highlifhts)
生駒山(mountain climbing, amusement park, and 宝山寺), 長弓寺(established in 1279, irregular English volunteer activity, “Templish”).
How comfortable is the dormitory? If you are not a dormitory student, please tell us about your commute.
I live in a couple-type dormitory with affordable rent, well-equipped facilities, and a beautiful forest view. If you've ever rented a place in a big city, this place feels like paradise.
Tell us about something you think that only you have experienced.
In Taiwan, all men are required to serve one year of mandatory military service. I chose to fulfill my duty through alternative service and volunteered to serve at a local fire department. For one year, I was on the front lines—riding in ambulances and fire trucks almost every day, witnessing countless emergencies, disasters, and moments of life and death.
