Comments on the award

I am deeply honored to have received the Excellent Presentation Award at the 156th Kansai Laboratory Animal Research. I am truly delighted that my daily research efforts have been recognized, and it is a profound joy to receive such a prestigious award for the first time. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Associate Professor Ayako Isotani for her guidance, as well as to all the members of the Organ Developmental Engineering Laboratory, the staff of the animal facility, university affiliates, and my parents. I will continue to dedicate myself to further advancing my research.

Title of the Award

Rat Lungs Generated in Interspecies Chimeras Mature to the Verge of Acquiring Respiratory Function

Details of the awarded research

In the field of regenerative medicine, one of the ultimate goals is to artificially create human organs, which holds the potential to address the shortage of organ donors for transplantation.
In our laboratory, we used the "blastocyst complementation method," which enables the creation of organs derived from pluripotent stem cells within animals, to generate rat lungs inside mouse hosts. However, the lungs produced were immature and lacked respiratory function. In this study, we revealed that the rat lungs we created had matured to the verge of acquiring respiratory function. Moving forward, we aim to develop rat lungs with functional respiratory capacity using the blastocyst complementation method. Additionally, this research is expected to pave the way for future studies aimed at generating human lungs with respiratory function within the bodies of large animals.
