Please tell us about your own research and what you find interesting about it.

By harnessing the power of biotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI), we are developing technologies to produce biofuels (e.g., jet fuel and biohydrogen) and green chemicals (e.g., fragrances, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, biodegradable plastics, feed additives, textiles, and paints) from inedible biomass (e.g., corn and sugarcane residues, food waste), which is a renewable resource. Plenty of private companies have adopted our technology and we are continuing research and development to support this commercialization.

Please tell us about the difficulties and joys of the research field.

Since a number of our target compounds has been considered difficult to produce biologically, we have to construct artificial metabolic pathways using bio X digital artificial intelligence technology. We’ve succeeded in developing production of compounds applicable as raw materials for fragrances, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, biodegradable plastics, feed additives, and other products. Our dream is to commercialize all these compounds produced by our technology, and currently we have commercialized some of them.

Please tell us about the expected results and social significance of the project.

By converting raw materials from petroleum to inedible biomass, we expect to achieve a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. We are developing technologies aimed at a recycling and decarbonization oriented society, thus contributing to the Japanese government's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Biorefinery technology, which produces biofuels and green chemicals from inedible biomass, can be applied to a wide range of fields such as chemistry, fuel, medicine, environment, food, and electronics. By mastering the biorefinery technology, let’s actively participate in various fields.
