Environmental Microbiology

Please tell us about your own research and what you find interesting about it.

We study the metabolism, evolution, and utilization of plastic-degrading bacteria. Based on the microbiology and polymer chemistry pioneered by our predecessors, we’d like to blur the lines between those disciplines. If we look at things from a new angle, we’ll be able to see things that we couldn’t see before.

Please tell us about the difficulties and joys of the research field.

The aspects I enjoy the most are when I encounter an interesting phenomenon, when I can understand its background, when I come across an unexpected result, when I can think about why it occured, when I can see how the pieces fit together, and when I can see the effort and growth of a graduate student.

Please tell us about the expected results and social significance of the project.

The reality of plastic biodegradation, unraveling the black box of the mechanism. Let's learn from microorganisms.

A message of support for students who are about to take the exam

Please immerse yourself in the research (and not only the research) at hand. I believe that the experience of working on problem-solving will be a good way to get ahead in your research at NAIST, and eventually in society.

What websites, books, review articles, and so on, do you recommend for studying in order to apply for the lab ?
What do you do to keep yourself fresh?
