Systems Neurobiology and Medicine

Please tell us about your own research and what you find interesting about it.

We’re studying the mechanisms of neural network formation and cell migration from the viewpoint of force generation at the molecular level. We’re also analyzing cell shape formation through intracellular molecular transport. It’s a great pleasure to learn about the amazing and clever mechanisms of living things through these studies.

Please tell us about the difficulties and joys of the research field.

It’s fun to be able to experience the new discoveries made by the members of the laboratory every week. In addition, although research sometimes does not progress as expected, I believe that such experiences are valuable for developing problem-solving skills.

Please tell us about the expected results and social significance of the project.

The research results are expected to lead to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of neural network formation, memory, immune cell function, and cancer infiltration, as well as to the development of treatments for modern intractable diseases such as spinal cord injury, brain trauma, Alzheimer's disease, and malignant tumors.

A message of support for students who are about to take the exam

For your success in society, it’s important for you to learn bioscience knowledge and techniques as well as to acquire problem-solving skills and the ability to accomplish your mission. We hope that you will develop these abilities through your daily research activities.

What websites, books, review articles, and so on, do you recommend for studying in order to apply for the lab ?

We recommend you first do a thorough reading of the textbook Essential Cell Biology. You can also visit the following websites to see presentations of our research and view our labs. Our labs use cutting-edge methods in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, developmental biology, and biophysics, but it’s not hard to get started. We'll teach you the basics.

What do you do to keep yourself fresh?

I like to exercise. Before COVID-19, I used to swim in the pool every week, and now I walk 7,000–10,000 steps every day. I also enjoy drinking wine, listening to music, and perusing art.
