2026 International Student Workshop was held
This year’s International Student Workshop was held from September 14 to 18, 2026, and, as in the previous year, was organized by our university. Students and faculty from our university, UC Davis (UCD), and the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences participated, deepening their understanding of each other’s research and cultures through research presentations and a variety of exchange activities.
The first two days were held at a lodging facility in Nara City, where the event began with an activity titled “Nara Science Challenge.” Students from the three institutions formed small, mixed-group teams and conducted fieldwork throughout Nara City.
Starting on the 16th, the venue moved to our university, where research talks and poster presentations were held. Students presented their research outcome and engaged in lively discussions with one another. On the 18th, in addition to research presentations by faculty members from IGDB and UCD, an award ceremony was held during which President Shiozaki presented the NAIST International Exchange Service Award to UCD’s Professor Emeritus Kenneth C. Burtis, who has long been dedicated to international collaborative education with our university.
We also invited Dr. Takeshi Kondo and Dr. Yasuyuki Takahashi, both graduates of our university who are active in academia and industry, to give career talks. Hearing about the experiences of these two doctors provided students with a valuable opportunity to reflect on their futures as researchers and explore diverse career paths.
Throughout this event-packed week, participating students met many peers and forged connections that transcended laboratory and national boundaries. We hope that the experiences and interactions gained during this workshop will lead to future research activities.
