The Bio Summer Camp 2026 was held.
Bio Summer Camp 2026, the 22nd annual edition of the program, was held over two days on August 19 and 20. As part of the graduate education program, Bio Summer Camp is organized each year to promote research progress through advisor hearings and faculty mentoring, while also enhancing students’ ability to present their research and engage in discussions in English.
This year, the event brought together 49 doctoral students in the first and second years of the doctoral program (D1 and D2), 14 second-year master’s students (M2) aspiring to advance to the doctoral program, as well as one student from Kyoto University of Advanced Science and two students from Nagahama Institute of Bio-Science and Technology. Oral and poster presentations were conducted at Millennium Hall.
D2 students delivered 15-minute oral presentations in English, including question-and-answer sessions. Prior to the event, students who wished to do so received individualized coaching from faculty members specializing in English education, allowing them to prepare thoroughly for their presentations. On the day of the event, the audience enjoyed high-quality presentations comparable to those seen at international conferences, providing the students with a valuable learning experience. In addition, D2 students served as session chairs, facilitating the presentations and actively engaging in discussions in English. Following the oral presentations, 45-minute advisor hearings were conducted as part of the students’ mid-term assessment, generating lively discussions on the progress of their research.
Meanwhile, D1 students and the participants from Kyoto University of Advanced Science and Nagahama Institute of Bio-Science and Technology took part in a poster preview session, during which they introduced their research in 90-second presentations prior to the poster session. Although some appeared nervous, they effectively communicated the significance of their research in English and actively promoted their work to the audience. During the subsequent poster session, D1 students, M2 students, and visiting students presented their research findings. Participants exchanged ideas not only with their supervisors and peers in related fields but also with faculty members and students from different research areas, fostering interdisciplinary discussion and collaboration.
At the conclusion of the program, awards were presented to students who demonstrated excellence in oral presentations and poster design. Three students received the Best Presentation Award based on voting by participating students and faculty members, recognizing the overall quality of their presentations. In addition, a new Best Poster Award for D1 students was introduced this year. Two students were selected to receive this award based on evaluations of the appeal and design of their posters by faculty members, including members of the Bio Summer Camp organizing committee, as well as external reviewers. Award recipients were presented with certificates and prizes.
Bio Summer Camp 2026 was once again a vibrant and successful event, providing students with valuable opportunities to learn, exchange ideas, and gain inspiration through research presentations and discussions. The program highlighted the achievements of graduate education in the Bioscience field and served as an important occasion for students to further strengthen their motivation and enthusiasm for future research activities.
