2025 International Student Workshop was held

With support from J-PEAKS, this year’s International Student Workshop was hosted by NAIST for the first time in six years, running for six days from September 15 to 20, 2025. A total of 41 students participated: 19 from NAIST, 10 from UC Davis, and 12 from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. On the 16th and 17th, participants stayed at nearby accommodations, and all students gave both oral and poster presentations. The poster sessions featured in-depth one-on-one discussions. As a special program, alumni now serving as university faculty—Dr. Shunsuke Miyashima (Ishikawa Prefectural University) and Dr. Kota Yanagitani (Osaka University)—led a career seminar, followed by a panel discussion that included faculty from all three institutions, generating lively Q&A on a wide range of topics, including differences between academic and industry careers.

On the 18th, the venue moved to NAIST for the “UCD–IGDB–NAIST Joint Symposium,” where faculty members from each university introduced their research. Many NAIST members attended and engaged with cutting-edge research. In the afternoon, lab tours were held, allowing students to visit multiple laboratories and experience NAIST’s research environment. On the 19th, “cultural visits” to Osaka and Nara enabled participants to explore cultural heritage and local communities, further deepening their exchange.

Guided by the principle of “an international conference built by students themselves,” the workshop placed students at the center of operations—from producing the program booklet, designing the venue layout, and preparing and setting up posters, to managing the schedule (including lab visits) and even organizing and leading the cultural visits. This provided a valuable opportunity to cultivate practical collaborative skills that transcend laboratories, nationalities, and languages.
