The 13th International Student Workshop was held.

The 13th International Student Workshop was held at I&I LAND (Shijonawate city) and the NAIST campus on November 11th-16th, 2019.

36 students from University of California Davis (UCD, 9 students), Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Genetic and Development Biology (CAS-IGDB, 9 students) and Division of Biological Science at NAIST (18 D2 students) participated in this year’s workshop. In the first half of the workshop held at I&I LAND, participants formed three groups and each student presented and discussed their research work in English in 30 minutes. This was followed by special lectures by Prof. Henry Ho (UCD) and Prof. Weixiang Guo (CAS-IGBD).

In the second half of the workshop, the participants moved to the NAIST campus. This part was started with the opening lecture by Prof. Mark Winey (Dean, College of Biological Sciences, UCD) and oral presentations by 9 students selected based on the 30-minute presentations. All students presented their posters and actively discussed them with others even involving researchers at NAIST who did not register for the workshop.

The students also formed small groups to produce short videos about topics related biology and biotechnology. The videos were screened at the end of the workshop and the audience voted for their favorite video. The winner of the most excellent video award was announced at the award ceremony and the participants immensely enjoyed the program. We hope that the workshop doesn’t only promote research exchange between the three institutions but also serves as a platform for students to build friendships with others from different countries.
