Rice is one of the most important crops in the world and also it is the great material for molecular genetics because of the huge collection of genetic mutant, relatively straightforward transformation procedures, and the entire information of the genome sequences. The Shimamoto laboratory has two major research programs in rice. One project centers on how flowering is initiated by the florigen, the mobile flowering signal, in rice shoot apical meristem, the unique tissue to decide to produce whether leaf or flower. A second project is directed towards understanding the plant innate immunity to prevent the pathogen attack to rice at both the biochemical and cell biological levels. Our goal of these studies is to improve the rice character for the stable production and supply for the future in our earth.
